The British, Powerful, strong, and strategic, plot to take over the very vital state of New York. coming down from Canada the British hope to join up with General Howe, in the direction of Albany and blockade the colonists. After the Americans defeat at Long Island, the British spirits were high, and taking forts such as Fort Washington all but a breeze.
Capture of New York
After a not-so successful attack at Boston the British decided to attempt capture at New York, knowing it might throw the rebel fighters into turmoil. General Sir William Howe brought together men on Staten Island in July 1776. This made General Washington, with only a troop of about 9,000 men wary of what general Howe would do next. In September 15, General Howe around 12,000 men to lower Manhattan, and undoubtedly, with almost no trouble, took New York.
British Occupy New York City
As a thought, or an attempt at driving away the British, General Washington had the idea of Burning New York city so that all the resources left in the City would burn, and the British would have no use for the husk of city. Washington was heavily advised not to do so, and so abandoned the idea, and withdrew his forces. When the British occupied the City a good three days after, and Fire broke out anyway, seemingly from a fight at a tavern in New York, much of the city was burnt, and there was no way to stop the fire from spreading.
All in all, the Capture consisted of many battles, defeats and losses, by both parties. The British managed to remain in New York, and keep it under their rule, until the end of the war 1783. Though a win for the British, it only helped them a little bit, and they still lost the War
